In Murambi, mornings begin quietly. At dawn, before the sun fully rises, the air is cool and the soil is soft from the night. Farmers walk the steep hills like guardians of their heritage, tending to coffee trees that have nourished their families for generations. One by one, they bend down, place seedlings into the earth, and gently cover the roots with soil. It is careful, resilient work done with hope. These farmers are at the heart of Rutasoka, the source of the coffee we cherish.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

Coffee has shaped life in Murambi for generations, paying school fees, supporting families, and bringing pride to the community. However, years of continuous production have pressured both soil and trees. Aging plants yield less, seasons are less predictable, and climate variability has altered rainfall cycles, affecting soil stability and crop performance. For farmers, the question has shifted from merely producing coffee today to adapting farming systems to secure yields and livelihoods for the future. They know well: if you don't plant for tomorrow, the future slowly disappears.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

Murambi's fertile slopes have long been the backbone of coffee production. Without strategic renewal efforts, this once-thriving region faced significant risks: diminishing harvests, decreased profitability, and a disconnect for the next generation of farmers. Sustainable practices are imperative, enhancing productivity while ensuring the agricultural community's long-term viability. In June 2025, Rutasoka deepened its engagement with the farming community, focusing on the land itself. Farmers voiced concerns about declining harvests and soils that no longer held moisture, coupled with fears for the future. The initial phase involved strategically removing outdated trees, creating opportunities for new growth. Nurseries were meticulously prepared, and compost was reintroduced to revitalize the soil's nutrient profile and foster a healthier ecosystem. New coffee trees require 8 to 10 months of careful nurturing before being transplanted, and an additional 3 to 4 years to yield commercially viable coffee cherries. Farmers understood: renewing the land demands steadfast commitment. Over time, 50,000 new coffee seedlings were planted across Murambi to replace aging trees, alongside 4,000 shade trees to protect crops and restore biodiversity. Every seedling was planted by hand, on land that families know deeply. Farmers continued learning together, sharing knowledge about caring for young trees and keeping the soil healthy.
