The story behind Rutasoka From South Kivu to Sweden
Rebu Burubwa grew up in South Kivu in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where coffee has long been a natural part of people's everyday lives and an important source of livelihood.
When political unrest forced him and his family to seek refuge in Sweden in 2007, a new chapter in his life began. At the same time, his ties to his homeland and the people there remained just as strong.
Living between East Africa and Sweden gave Rebu a unique perspective. He saw how coffee can create opportunities when built on quality, long-term partnerships and shared value creation.
That conviction became the foundation for Rutasoka – a company that connects exceptional coffee from East Africa with businesses and consumers in Sweden through a transparent value chain built on quality, trust and long-term relationships.
A vision that lives on
Before founding Rutasoka, Rebu was driven by a desire to create opportunities for the communities that shaped him. When he saw the challenges facing his hometown of Uvira, he decided to take action. In 2017, he initiated a women’s clinic to improve access to prenatal care and safe childbirth. It was the beginning of a long-term commitment to creating lasting value. Today, that same commitment lives on through Rutasoka. Through long-term partnerships, responsible trade and local initiatives, we work together with our partners to strengthen people’s livelihoods and create lasting opportunities.
Our first initiative The Women's Clinic in Uvira
The Women's Clinic was founded to improve access to prenatal care and give women a safer and more secure start in life. In addition to better care, the clinic has created jobs, strengthened local healthcare expertise and become a symbol of hope and faith in the future in society. This was the beginning of our journey. Today, our work extends far beyond healthcare. Through coffee, long-term partnerships and locally rooted initiatives, we continue to create opportunities and long-term value where it is needed most.

The importance of the Women's Clinic extends far beyond healthcare. It has become a symbol of hope and faith in the future in the region.
By creating jobs and training local healthcare professionals, the clinic strengthens the local economy and contributes to sustainable development where more people have the opportunity to participate and create positive change.
The project was the start of Rutasoka's journey – a journey where sustainability and long-term value creation are at the center of strengthening the communities we work with.
